Nairobi will host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, a first for Africa

A continent that has produced generations of great athletes will finally welcome this particular global stage. The next big milestone for Kenyan athletics is about more than who crosses a finish line first.

World Athletics announced on Tuesday that Nairobi will host the 2029 World Athletics Championships. It will be the first time the flagship outdoor championships are held in Africa. Munich will stage the 2031 edition.

The decisions came from the governing body’s council meeting in Budapest. Both events are planned for September, continuing its aim of putting a major global championship near the end of the athletics season.

A new stage, with experience behind it

Nairobi is not starting from zero as an international host. World Athletics pointed to the city’s World Under-18 Championships in 2017 and World Under-20 Championships in 2021 as part of a wider record of events held across Africa.

However, hosting the senior outdoor world championships is a different milestone. It brings the central event in the sport’s championship calendar to a continent that has previously watched it take place elsewhere.

AFP reported that Nairobi succeeded against a field that included London, Munich and Rome. It also reported World Athletics president Sebastian Coe’s comments about the strength of the bid and the redevelopment of Kasarani Stadium.

The stadium work is part of preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. That provides context for the facilities, but an athletics championship will still require its own planning and delivery.

Why the location matters

For a young athlete, watching elite competition nearby can feel different from following it through a screen. The running track stops being a distant television setting and becomes a place where the world’s best are preparing, competing and dealing with pressure.

That does not mean one championship automatically creates the next generation of champions. Training spaces, coaching and opportunities to compete remain important long after visiting teams leave. The longer-term value will depend on what the event helps build around it.

AS placed the decision within athletics’ wider move into new host locations. With Beijing already chosen for 2027, the next three editions will take the championships through Asia, Africa and Europe.
