Melbourne got the giant sporting occasion. San Francisco got the result. The 49ers beat the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on September 11, turning a landmark day for American football into a rough afternoon for their rivals.
ABC reported a crowd of 100,021 at the first regular-season NFL game played in Australia. That is a lot of people learning, arguing about or already knowing exactly what a fourth down means.
Quarterback Brock Purdy threw three touchdown passes. The 49ers’ own match roundup highlighted both his contribution and a defence that kept Los Angeles to seven points. Mike Evans also made an impact in his first regular-season appearance for San Francisco.
For a newcomer, the quarterback is the player who usually directs the attack and decides where to throw the ball. A touchdown pass means a teammate catches that throw for a touchdown. Three of them is a useful way to introduce yourself to a stadium full of new viewers.
The Rams had scored the game’s first touchdown, so this was not a case of San Francisco controlling every moment from the opening whistle. But the early encouragement did not become a lasting advantage. Los Angeles struggled to keep pace as the game developed.
The Rams’ official recap confirms the 20-point defeat. For fans reading both teams’ accounts, the tone naturally differs, but the central result is the same: San Francisco left with a strong opening win, and Los Angeles left with work to do.
The teams took very different approaches to the long trip. San Francisco arrived a week before the game. The Rams landed about 28 hours before kick-off, according to ABC. After a defeat like this, that contrast was always going to attract attention.
Rams coach Sean McVay said he did not believe the late arrival explained the loss. It would therefore be a stretch to present jet lag as the proven reason for the score. A noticeable difference between teams is not automatically the cause of what happened on the field.
The occasion also gave unfamiliar viewers a chance to follow a full game instead of a few spectacular clips. American football can look confusing in short bursts. Watching possession change, a defence hold firm and an attack build a drive gives those isolated highlights some meaning.
One result cannot settle a whole season. It can, however, give a new audience a team to remember. On this first regular-season NFL visit to Australia, the 49ers made sure their name was attached to the win.
