The next big laptop pitch is about where the work happens. Microsoft wants more demanding AI tasks to run on the computer in front of you, with cloud services joining in when needed.
At its October 7 Windows and Surface event, the company opened preorders for Surface Laptop Ultra. Microsoft’s announcement gives a starting price of $2,599 and says availability begins October 16. That makes this a premium machine aimed at creators, developers and people building with AI.
The laptop uses Nvidia’s RTX Spark platform. Microsoft lists configurations with up to 128GB of unified memory, shared by the processor and graphics hardware. That is a maximum configuration, not a promise that the starting-price model includes all that memory.
There is a 15-inch touchscreen, user-removable storage and a magnetic charging connection built into a USB-C port. Microsoft also lists HDMI, USB-A, an SD card reader and a headphone jack. For anyone whose desk has become a museum of adapters, the ports may be the easiest feature to appreciate.
The official product page positions the machine around local AI and 3D graphics. It also describes a 120Hz display and gaming features for supported titles. Those specifications explain the target audience, but they do not tell us how every app or game will perform.
A launch demonstration can show an intended workflow. It cannot replace independent testing of sustained speed, fan noise, battery life and compatibility. Those details matter when a laptop costs this much and has to serve as somebody’s everyday work machine.
Microsoft uses that phrase for a mix of local and cloud AI. Some work would run on the PC’s own hardware, while other tasks would go to remote models. The aim is to make better use of local computing power while keeping access to larger cloud systems.
In its Windows announcement, Microsoft says upcoming Copilot capabilities will use local files and activity with permission, take actions on the computer, and call on locally running models. The company expects these Copilot features to start reaching Copilot+ PCs in the coming months.
That timeline is worth keeping separate from the laptop’s release date. New hardware becoming available does not mean every software feature shown alongside it is ready on day one.
The broader idea is interesting for young developers and creators: a computer that can do more AI work itself. The practical test will be whether the available tools make real projects faster or cheaper enough to justify the hardware. The preorder button is ready. The everyday verdict still needs time.
