Search continues after Indonesian ferry capsizes in the Java Sea

The response also depended on vessels already in the area. In a later Sunday briefing reported by ANTARA, officials described people being evacuated by multiple boats. Basarnas also relayed the captain’s account that waves struck the ship from its right-hand side as it began to lean.

Changing totals need careful reading

Early rescue reports gave different counts of those evacuated, rescued alive and still missing. Those categories do not mean the same thing. An evacuation total can include both survivors and recovered bodies, so it should not automatically be presented as a survivor count.

For families, the most important update concerns a named person, rather than a headline number. The local rescue chief urged relatives and the public to await official information while teams continued monitoring conditions and adjusting the search.

Ferries connect communities across Indonesia’s many islands. Reuters noted that sea travel is often more affordable and available than flying, which makes reliable maritime transport an everyday need.

As the operation continues, confirmed identities, accurate counts and clear updates remain essential. The immediate priority is finding those still missing and caring for survivors, while the questions about the vessel’s final journey are investigated.
