A larger screen arrives in a pocket-sized fold, with an October release planned.

The familiar phone-shaped rectangle has picked up a hinge. Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on September 9, bringing its first foldable handset into a market where Samsung and Chinese brands have been experimenting for years.
The starting US price is $1,999, according to Reuters' launch coverage. That is a serious price tag for a device whose main party trick is opening into something larger. The real question is how useful that extra space becomes after the launch-day excitement settles.
Apple says the Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch screen inside. You can use it closed for quick tasks, then open it like a book when you want more room. The company's official announcement lists the A20 Pro chip and a design that adapts its software to the folding format.
Imagine checking a message on the smaller screen, then opening the device to see more of a document or a game. The appeal is less about adding another gadget to your bag and more about asking one gadget to handle different situations.
Reuters reported that Apple demonstrated multiple app windows and work uses such as video calls and messaging. For someone juggling a conversation and a document, a wider workspace could reduce the constant switching between screens.
Apple did not invent folding phones. Its arrival matters because it brings the format to people who prefer the iPhone's apps and familiar controls. Whether those people want it enough to pay this price is a separate question.
Axios' event coverage placed the Duo alongside the new iPhone 18 Pro and updates to Apple Watch and AirPods. The folding model was the standout change in shape, within a much larger hardware announcement.
Apple lists pre-orders from October 16 and availability from October 23 in an initial group of markets that includes India. Those are the announced dates. The US starting price should not be mistaken for an Indian retail price, or for the cost of every storage option.
A launch presentation can show what a device is designed to do. It cannot settle every everyday question about comfort, app behaviour or how the hinge feels after months of use. Those answers require time with the finished product.
For now, the news is that a folding iPhone has moved from speculation to an announced product. The screen opens wider. Whether enough wallets do the same will decide how big this change really becomes.
